What is the Western Functional Area?

POCTEFA 2021-2027, the Interreg VI-A Spain-France-Andorra Territorial Cooperation Program, introduces a higher level of territorialization of the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) through the Political Objective 5: "A Europe closer to its citizens" and its development by promoting functional areas.

In this programming period, new funding opportunities arise for territory projects aligned with territorial strategies' objectives that will be implemented through actions aimed at improving the quality of life for cross-border citizens.

AFOMEF is the Western Functional Area, one of the five functional areas or "cross border living areas" identified by the POCTEFA program.

Located around the junction of the Pyrenees’ massif and the Bay of Biscay, the Western Functional Area integrates the territories of Euskadi, Navarre, and the southern part of Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region up to the Baretous Valley. A true living area and a key space for cross-border mobility in the Atlantic corridor.

The EGTC Euroregion New Aquitaine Euskadi Navarra is the organisation responsible for coordinating and boosting the Western Functional Area.
